Understanding advisor fees

Advisory fees are quoted in several different ways, which makes firms genuinely hard to compare. These are the questions we are asked most often.

How much does a financial advisor cost?
Most advisors who manage investments charge a percentage of the assets they manage, commonly around 1% per year. Others charge a flat planning fee, an hourly rate, or earn commissions on the products they sell. Sage charges a tiered percentage fee that starts at 0.9% and decreases as assets grow. We do not charge commissions.
What is the difference between fee-only and fee-based?
The two terms sound alike and mean different things. A fee-only firm is paid solely by its clients. A fee-based firm may be paid by clients and also earn commissions from product sales. Sage is fee-only, which removes any incentive to recommend a product because it pays the advisor.
How is an advisory fee actually charged?
Ongoing advisory fees are typically calculated on the value of the accounts under management and billed quarterly from your account or invoice. Because the fee moves with the account value, it rises and falls with the portfolio rather than staying fixed.
What does the fee include?
For Sage's ongoing relationships the fee covers investment management and advice surrounding various financial planning topics, such as: retirement, cash flow, tax, benefits and equity compensation, estate, and insurance. These topics are covered through our comprehensive onboarding process and yearly ongoing financial planning meetings.
Is there an option that is not based on assets?
Yes. Sage offers a one-time comprehensive financial plan, starting at $5,000, which is a flat fee and does not require moving any accounts. It suits people who want a plan and intend to implement it themselves.
Why do fees decrease as assets increase?
Tiered schedules reflect the fact that the work involved in managing a larger portfolio does not grow in direct proportion to its size. Sage's schedule steps down through several tiers as assets under management rise.

Sage's full schedule is published on the Services & Fees page, and the Process page walks through what working together looks like.
